Smartphone manufacturers have set their sight on manufacturing phones without frames surrounding the display. Leading tech giants, such as Samsung, LG, and Essential alike have endeavored to create a feeling of holding the screen in hand.
Xiaomi has stepped up to the challenge by launching the first Android One phone with a stunning thin bezel. The manufacturer launched Mi Mix with nary a frame on a 6.44-inch screen in 2016. The design was inspired by the idea of eliminating borders entirely. There were other significant changes made by the company like installing piezoelectric version of earpiece and shifting front camera at lower right side of the frame.
Aware of these issues, the Beijing-headquartered company launched a sequel that it claims to be a ‘concept’ device for sale only in the Chinese market.
Xiaomi has recently announced the next version of the device, Mi Mix 2. This device rectified issues of its predecessor like the screen size and limited cellular connectivity. Also, it will be made available in every market the company sells phones, except the U.S. market.
Like its predecessor, Mi Mix 2 accentuates end-to-end display. It has a 5.99-inches display with 18:9 aspect ratio. This size resembles other high end phones of its competitors such as LG and Samsung. Though screen is not as bright and vibrant as OLED displays in Samsung’s phones, LCD panel offers 2,160 x 1,080 pixels of resolution for everyday use.
There is a large border on lower side of the screen flanked by a front camera, notification light, and other necessary buttons to power the display panel. Curved corners and scant frames above and on sides make it handy.
The company replaced piezoelectric version of earpiece with a standard earpiece speaker.
Proximity sensor is replaced by an ultrasonic system to turn off the screen when the phone is used for a call.
Mi Mix 2 is equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor and 6GB of RAM. It is available with internal storage capacities of 64, 128, and 256GB. It has MIUI 9, which is based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat.
On the other hand, Xiaomi’s flagship device has a single 12 megapixel lens camera instead of dual camera setup. It does not offer water resistance. It also lacks headphone jack and wireless charging feature.
Though there are few shortcomings of Mi Mix 2, Xiaomi has managed to grab a place in the list of slim-bezel phones.
