Digital assistants have penetrated in smartphones to enable efficiency and ease in use. With an advent of smart technologies, digital or virtual assistants have become an integral part of devices. Smart homes have a digital assistant to form a connection between different devices. Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri, and Amazon’s Alexa are some of the popular virtual assistants in the world of technology. Besides the recent findings of Amazon’s virtual assistant Alexa, which used to laugh creepily at random times and send randomly recorded conversations to contacts of users, virtual assistants have been preferred by people to carry out simple tasks. As everything gets smarter than before with implementation of different artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, digital assistants are needed for implementation of various tasks. There will be no surprise they will be installed on every electronic device possible. Their dominance will continue and there will be innovative assistants making their mark across the international market. Among various applications they are used in, Microsoft decided to include Google Assistant and Alexa in its Xbox One. The support from both virtual assistants will be a treat for gamers as the consoles will take voice inputs and perform necessary tasks.
Microsoft Central revealed that next versions of Xbox One will have a dashboard to enable Alexa or Google Assistant with the help of a skill on both platforms. Microsoft’s devices only support Cortana digital assistant through its Kinect or headset. However, Cortana’s skills are limited for now. The inclusion of support from Alexa and Google Assistant will enable gamers to control their devices without depending on Kinect or headset to give commands. It is unclear what features of these digital assistants will be included.
Microsoft Xbox tech expert Albert Penello joined hands with Amazon to “help figure out how to grow Alexa/Echo presence in gaming.” If this collaboration is successful, the integration of Alexa in a Microsoft device will help in growing its presence across the world. Microsoft collaborated with Amazon to integrate Alexa and Cortana, outlined the Redmond-headquartered tech giant at its Build conference last month. Microsoft demonstrated how Cortana runs on Alexa and vice versa. It functions easily with the command to Cortana, stating, “Cortana, open Alexa.” Then a user can provide follow up question asking to send an email to a specific person whom Alexa will not be able to search and send. At that time, Cortana can come to rescue. Both assistants will work in collaboration to perform the given task.
Microsoft and Amazon have been working in collaboration on integrating both assistants, which implies that Windows 10 PCs will have an in-built Alexa. The software maker is running a beta test for now. None of these companies have committed about the time and date on which end users will enable these assistants. However, Microsoft launched a website in which users will sign up to get information about when Alexa and Cortana will be live. Let us see when the software firm will make an announcement of the integration of Cortana with other digital assistants.
