With the success of the Batman: Arkham trilogy, the night-crusader of Gotham received his own open-world video game – the Arkham Knight. All the four games were well received by both critics and audiences – and were partially responsible for spawning the DC universe film adaptations. Similarly, the introduction of Spider-Man in the Marvel movie Captain America: Civil War propagated the friendly neighborhood superhero to receive his own titular movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming. Now, Spidey appears in a game that embodies the open-world feature of the Arkham series despite taking place in the Marvel universe.
Developed by Insomniac Games, the game is simply titled Spider-Man. It was officially released on 7th September, 2018 for PlayStation 4 and was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The video game unfurls a completely new storyline that’s not depicted in any previous Spider-man comic book, film or video game. Unlike most of the superhero-based video games that excessively focus on their origin story, the new Spider-Man game begins eight years after he first achieves his superpower after being bit by a radioactive spider.
The unique and entirely new storyline manages to create a suspense in the game that’s usually lost in other superhero-based video games. The beautiful, majestic and matured story focusses on Spider-Man and Peter Parker’s daily life, with distractions and problems right around the corner. The game sees Spidey become a cop in order to help the NYPD, transform his suit to blend into other novices trying to replicate him, and much more. For fans and ardent comic book readers, the unique storyline is a huge bonus for playing the game.
In addition to the storyline, the game also features amazing graphics – that sees Spider-Man move gloriously across New York City’s skyscrapers. The gameplay enables Spider-Man to perform mid-air tricks, run parallel to the ground on the sides of buildings, zip across rooftops and even latch onto the subway for faster travel. The movement is half the fun in the game – and the brilliant graphics manages to bring out the best of it.
As Spider-Man tackles a variety of enemies in the game, Insomniac studios have ensured the inclusion of artful combat moves. By accurately capturing Spider-Man’s fast reflexes, along with his spider-sense, the gameplay offers several aerial and ground-based fighting techniques that makes confrontation fun and challenging. The gameplay also takes Spider-Man to the nooks and crannies of New York City, beautifully designed in an open-world format. While navigating, Spider-Man can also take pictures and selfies of him in various landmarks – including the fictional Wakandan embassy and the Avengers building, a tribute to the Marvel Universe.
The game has received universal critical acclaim, going as far as being called one of the best superhero games ever made. The gameplay, particularly the combat and web-swinging mechanics were particularly praised by gamers worldwide. The unique storyline, along with brilliant graphics and unparalleled design, also received widespread accolades. It won the award for the best PlayStation 4 game at the 2018 Gamescom.
The new Spider-Man game has also received applause for its message of inclusiveness. During the gameplay, Spider-man often lands on building perches and walls that are shown to mast the LGBT flag.
The game became the fastest-selling Marvel-branded video game of all time, selling more copies in its release week than any other game in 2018. At $59.99, it’s an affordable game that intrigues its player and provides a rich and detailed gameplay that’s sure to titillate their every sense.
