Dune Receives Eight Minute Standing Ovation At Venice Film Festival

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Dune debuted at the Venice Film Festival and it ended up receiving a standing ovation lasting for eight minutes, making it the longest round of applause this year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao, a member of the festival’s competition jury this year, rushed through the aisles to greet the Dune director with a big hug shouting, “fantastic!” The crowd`s standing ovation, meanwhile, roared on for a continuous eight minutes.

The film became the talk of the town almost immediately as many praised how well the story was brought to life. Timothée Chalamet played the protagonist Paul Atreides and was accompanied by fellow stars, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista and many more. Villeneuve’s adaptation of the film splits Dune into two parts. There has yet to be a green light on the second Dune film.

Dune is an adaptation to Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi classic. In 2020, Vanity Fair revealed the first official look of the film. The photo released shows Chalamet as protagonist Paul Atreides. His character is seen walking on his home planet of Caladan as spaceships transport his family to their new home of Arrakis in the frame’s backdrop. The film was supposed to release in December 2020 but got pushed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s what Chalamet said about joining the film: “The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts. He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully, a decade later, or something like that.”
