OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will receive Android O, but that will be the last of it

After being criticized for withdrawing support for OnePlus 2 quietly, OnePlus has taken a much more transparent stance for its current generation smartphones – OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.

The smartphone maker has announced that it will be updating OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T to Android O, but that will be the last of it as far as operating system updates are concerned. It will not bring any new OS to the two smartphones. However, it has said it will be releasing security updates for the two smartphones for the foreseeable future.

The two smartphones will be eventually phased out globally in the upcoming days, except for India where OnePlus 3T will continue selling.

It is surprising the support for these two smartphones will be withdrawn so early in their lifecycle. The OnePlus 3T is only less than a year old and yet it faces the axe from the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. It seems that the company is following Google’s model of two-major-software-updates-per-device. This seems to be surprising as Apple manages to provide the latest OS updates to the iPhone 5S, a smartphone that was launched in 2013.

“Android O is going to be the last Android version update we’ll release for OP3/3T. We’ll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates. After the OP3/3T have been updated to Android O, we’ll start moving the Open Beta Program from OP3/3T to OP5,” said OliverZ, head of Product, OnePlus.
